If you’re wondering what happen to your completed tax return you mailed in months ago or the tax payment you made a few weeks ago hasn’t been cashed yet, do not fret. As of October 2, the IRS is experiencing an unopened mail backlog of around 5 million pieces of unopened mail. This unopened mail backlog consists of tax returns, tax payments and tax correspondence. At one point, during the suspension of services due to Covid-19, there were more than 11 million pieces of unopened mail sitting a various IRS processing centers. The IRS has made progress in processing all the unopened mail and hope to get through this backlog before the end of the year.
